Lady Dukes advance with win over Bethel

Gloucester High School advanced to the finals of the Peninsula District Softball Tournament Tuesday with a 6-3 win over fourth-seed Bethel at the Stoney Run Sports Complex in Newport News. The top-seeded Dukes (20-1) rode the long ball of Rhiannon Miller and Hannah Joyce and the pitching of Makayla Jenkins to the win.

After Jenkins struck out the side in the opening inning, Shelby Alto walked and Miller sent a deep line drive over the centerfield fence for a 2-0 lead. Bethel tied with runs in the second and third innings, and the score remained knotted until the fifth.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Joyce sent the 3-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to score Noodle Allen and Dez’re Maynora for a 5-2 lead. The Dukes stretched the lead to 6-2 when Alex Champ scored on a throwing error. Gloucester gave up an unearned run in the seventh that made it 6-3.
