The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team will soon enter its postseason Conference 42 tournament riding a four-game winning streak after picking up three decisive victories during the past week.
Mathews hosted the King William Lady Cavaliers on Thursday and neutralized their all-district guard most of the game. After relying on dependable defense for most of the season, Mathews continues to improve on the offensive side of the ball, attacking the basket at will and getting the low-post players involved.
Leading the Blue Devils in the 54-46 victory was Taylor South with 14 points, Maria Spadaccini with nine while Savanna Wooten and Madison Owens had eight points each. Madison South and Emily Brown contributed four points each, Whitney Eriksen chipped in three and Mariah Robinson and Hannah Rowe added two points apiece.
