The Mathews High School varsity softball team recorded another win last Wednesday, shutting out the visiting Northumberland Indians, 6-0.
In the Lady Devils’ last couple of games the girls have hit the ball very well, but this particular night, the bats were not as active against a slower pitcher. In the second inning, Lindsay Crigler started with a lead-off single but the next three players popped up.
Mathews finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when Sharese Jarvis singled to score Amanda Greene. With two outs and Kaitlin Eriksen and Crigler on second and third, Taylor Denton stroked a ball over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer.
While Mathews didn’t do much more offensively, exceptional pitching by Crigler and Kayla Robins, combined with a solid defense, held the Lady Indians scoreless.
Virginia Scatchard and Crigler each had two hits while Jarvis, Denton and Sydney James picked up one hit apiece.
