The Mathews High School varsity softball team improved its record to 11-6 overall, and 6-2 in the Tidewater District, following wins over Middlesex and Nandua. The Devils’ only district losses so far have come at the hands of the King William Cavaliers. The MHS defense and offense have become more consistent as the season has progressed.
On Friday, April 26, Mathews hosted Middlesex for its first game against its district rival this year. The game turned out to be no contest for the Devils. MHS shut out Middlesex in five innings, winning 13-0. Senior Kayla Robins pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts. Contributing hits for the Lady Devils were Hunter Thomas (two hits, three RBIs), Taylor Denton (one hit, one RBI), and Carole Bell, Madison Owens and Robins each contributed one hit. This game was the third no-hitter in a row for Robins, previously notching victories over West Point and Isle of Wight.
