The Mathews High School girls’ basketball season got underway Monday night as the Lady Blue Devils traveled to Northumberland.
Despite jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter, Mathews couldn’t find the basket in the second half and dropped the contest 52-28.
This season will be the debut for a new varsity coach as Tommy Eriksen and assistant Lawrence Ambrose moved to the varsity girls after five years of coaching the junior varsity program. Tom Spadaccini is also assisting the Lady Blue Devils.
Lady Devils will be young as their five graduates were key players. “While we lost a lot of points and rebounds from last year’s team, this is by far the deepest group I have ever coached,” Eriksen said. “Most of the time we will substitute five players at a time with no drop-off in expectations.”
