The Mathews High School varsity softball season came to an abrupt end last Wednesday at William Campbell High School, when the Lady Devils suffered a 12-0 shutout loss to the Generals in the Region 1A East semifinal game.
The Lady Devils scattered six hits over seven innings, stranding seven runners on base and failing to cross the plate a single time. From the mound, Kelly Adams and Madison Owens combined to strike out six while allowing only one walk. However, the William Campbell offense proved strong, earning 15 hits, four for extra bases and one out-of-the-park home run.
The Blue Devils were led at the plate by Savanna Wooten who went 2-for-3 with two singles. Madison South was 1-for-2 with a double. Madison Owens, Bailey Kujawski and Taylor South each also contributed a hit in the game.
