The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team took on the Colonial Beach Drifters in a pair of games in recent action. In the hard-fought contests, the Drifters came out on top, 3-1, on their home court on Aug. 27, and edged Mathews, 3-2, on Tuesday at MHS.
The Aug. 27 game started off with Colonial Beach serving and the Blue Devils trailing the entire time. It was point for point until the Blue Devils pulled out the win, 25-22. In the second set, the Blue Devils couldn’t keep the energy going and lost, 16-25. The third set was much like the first but the Drifters pulled out just enough to win, 23-25. The Blue Devils had a lot of pressure on them but just couldn’t stay in the game and lost the fourth set, 14-25, giving the win to the Drifters.
Hailey Denkinger and Hannah Davis both had 100 percent serving. Lindsay Coons had the highest passing average with a 1.75 out of 3. Addy Lowe had the highest hitting percentage with a 1.000.
