The Mathews High School varsity softball team is still looking to pick up its first win of the 2014 season, after dropping its first three regular season games. The Mathews squad, led by first-year head coach Julie Smith, is comprised of 14 players.
Returning to the team are seniors Carole Bell, Amanda Miller and Lexus Walton; juniors Kelly Adams, Allison Foster, Bailey Kujawski, Madison Owens, Taylor South and Hunter Thomas; and sophomore Savanna Wooten. New to the varsity team for 2014 are junior Torrie Walton and freshmen Keely Crittenden, Alexis Miles and Madison South. Assistant coaches with this year’s team are Karen Townsend and Debbie Smith.
Last Thursday, March 27, the Devils dropped both five-inning games of a doubleheader to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders by scores of 7-3 and 5-4.
