The Mathews High School varsity softball team posted wins over Middlesex and Warhill before running into King William pitcher Kayla Huffman on Tuesday, who shut out the Devils, 3-0.
The Devils hosted district rival Middlesex on Friday, winning 5-3. The Chargers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, increasing it to 3-0 in the fifth inning. The Lady Blue Devils finally made a charge in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Bailey Kujawski got two RBIs by hitting a line drive to right field. MHS loaded the bases again and Hunter Thomas drove the ball to the left field fence which scored two more runs. By the time the Chargers got three outs the damage was done and the Devils were ahead, 5-3.
In the sixth, Madison Owens relieved Kayla Robins and shut down the Chargers. Sammi Rutter led the Devils with two hits followed by Taylor South, Sydney James and Kujawski with one each.
