The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team won its season opener Tuesday night, crushing the Northampton Yellow Jackets by a 43-16 margin.
The varsity team’s two-hour trek to the Eastern Shore was well worth the effort as the Lady Devils posted the lopsided win. Zoe Camp, Lyla Duff, Grayson Griffith, Trinity Reynolds and Laura Rowe started on the court for Mathews. The first quarter was rough, as both teams were trying to find their rhythm on the floor. However, by halftime Mathews held a narrow 12-11 lead.
The Lady Devils came out of the locker room ready to dominate and take the win home. They forced the Lady Yellow Jackets to foul over and over in the third quarter giving several free baskets to Mathews.Leading scorers of the game were Griffith with 10 points and Camp and Rowe, tied with eight points.
