After struggling for much of the game, the Mathews High School varsity softball team put on an exciting two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night, coming from behind to beat West Point in the opening game of the Tidewater District tournament, 7-6.
The Lady Devils struggled at the plate and made numerous errors on the field throughout the contest. The Pointers were leading the game, 6-1, in the seventh when the Devils had one more chance to put some runs on the board or end the season prematurely. The girls responded with a rally, aided by key hits from the MHS substitute players and errors from the Pointer defenders to come up with the win.
Contributing hits to the Devils were Hunter Thomas and Madison Owens (2-for-4), Carole Bell (1-for-4) and Allison Foster and Amanda Miller (1-for-1).
