The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up three wins during the past week, playing non-district games against three Northern Neck foes.
Mathews traveled to Essex on Friday and demolished the Lady Trojans by the final score of 49-24 in a contest that was decided by halftime. The Lady Devils raced to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and never relinquished, taking a 33-11 halftime lead into the locker room. Head coach Robert Thomas was able to give his bench plenty of playing time, as the Lady Devils had two girls recovering from injuries and two more sick.
Leading the Lady Devils’ charge were Sharese Jarvis and Kaitlin Eriksen with 19 and 12 points, respectively. Other scorers for the night were Taylor Denton (seven points), Sydney Morgan (three), and Ashley Forrest, Angela Sale, Megan Zeller and Maggie Scribe (two points each). Although she didn’t score, Thomas lauded the efforts of freshman Emily Brown who played the game sick and unable to talk....
