Lady Devils beat Lafayette, K&Q

The Mathews High School varsity softball team went 2-1 in recent action, with wins over Lafayette and King and Queen. The MHS girls will host Charles City today in a game with playoff implications, according to head coach J.J. Ashberry.
The Lady Devils began action this week with an 11-0 loss last Thursday to King William. Angel Shultz pitched the entire game for Mathews, and although the Cavaliers scored 11 runs, she did a good job on the mound, Ashberry said. The Cavs’ pitcher dominated the MHS batters; the only hits came from Morgan Crittenden, who added two singles.
Monday’s game at Lafayette went much better for Mathews, as the Devils beat the Rams, 7-3. Mathews broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh to take control. Crittenden had a complete game victory, striking out 10, and the defense behind her was errorless.
