The Mathews High School volleyball team, the reigning Group A, Division 2 state champion, is set to make another run at the VHSL title when the Lady Devils host Northumberland tonight in the Region A final, starting at 6 o’clock.
Regardless of how Mathews does in that contest, the Devils are still guaranteed a spot in the state tournament quarterfinals on Monday. If Mathews wins, the girls will host that game against the Region B runner-up. If the Devils lose, they will travel to the Region B champions. Monday’s winners will travel to the Siegel Center in Richmond to play in Friday afternoon’s VHSL semifinals.
Mathews advanced in post-season play with wins over West Point, King William and Nandua. Last Thursday, the Lady Devils hosted the Tidewater District tournament in its entirety. In the first round, Mathews defeated the #4 seed Pointers in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-13 and 25-16.
