Lady Devils 2-1 on week

The Mathews High School varsity softball team had a pair of wins and a single, hard-fought loss this week. 
Last Thursday, the Lady Devils hosted the Northumberland Indians.  The Devils gained an early lead, putting two runs on the board in the first inning and eventually walking off the field with a 3-1 victory. Kelly Adams pitched the entire game for Mathews, striking out nine while allowing only four hits (all singles) and no walks. Madison Owens led the Devils’ offense going 2-for-2 with two singles, a walk, and two runs scored. Carole Bell was 1-for-2 with a double and Lexie Miles was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI.
The following night, the Lady Devils shut out the visiting Middlesex Chargers, 4-0. Mathews batted .364 as a team, going 8-for-22 on the night. Offensive standouts included Keely Crittenden (2-for-2, single, double, sacrifice), Hunter Thomas (1-for-1, bunt single, sacrifice), Savanna Wooten (1-for-1, single), and Madison South (1-for-2, single, RBI). ...
