The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams raced to victory on Oct. 12 in their last home meets of the season against runners from Middlesex and Washington and Lee high schools.
The Lady Devils won with 23 points, and the Devils won with 26 points, increasing the girls’ winning streak to 14-0, and the boys’ record to 12-2. Both teams demonstrated strong pack running at this meet, and proved themselves ready for the championship races.
Kyle Slaughter once again led the MHS harriers, winning by a 36-second margin over the next closest runner with a time of 17:45. Following closely for Mathews were Sam Jasinski (18:55), Nick Brown (18:58), Elisha Kane (19:11), Tucker Blackwell (19:16), Phillip Machen (19:27) and Sam Spadaccini (19:34). Eighth grader Hunter Wright broke the four-year-old course record for jayvee runners—19:54—with a time of 19:48.
