Lady Blue Devils fall in regional semifinals

Although the season ended in a lopsided loss in the regional semifinals, the Mathews High School girls’ basketball team can look back with pride on a successful hoop season.
The Lady Devils traveled to Petersburg last Wednesday, where they lost the playoff game, 65-15, to Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.
Knowing the Lady Dragons were very talented by their 20-2 record, the Lady Devils tried to focus on stopping their tall, low-post players and hope their shooting guards wouldn’t make many outside shots. This strategy worked pretty well for the first quarter; however, the hosts poured it on in the second quarter, scoring at will from inside the lane, as well as three pointers from the outside. The hosts continued their dominance in the second half.
Leading MHS with points was Maria Spadaccini with six followed by Taylor South, with three. Emily Brown, Madison Owens and Casey Kelly each adding two points.
