After starting the season with two wins, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team has struggled as of late, dropping four in a row. The latest losses were dealt to the Lady Devils by Gloucester, Northumberland and Rappahannock.
Last Wednesday, Mathews traveled to its next-door neighbor to face Gloucester. In the opening minutes, it looked as if Mathews might upset the AAA Lady Dukes, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. But Gloucester switched up its defense, pulled ahead at the half, 15-12, and dominated the last two quarters to win, 42-22.
Scoring for Mathews were Kaitlin Eriksen (11 points), Mackenzie Moughon (eight points), Taylor Denton (two points) and Shelby Ware (one point). For Gloucester, Cheyenne Land (12 points) and Mikaela Extine (11 points) ended the night in double digits.
