The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team clinched the regular season Tidewater District title this week with victories over Middlesex and King William.
Mathews hosted the Lady Chargers last Thursday night in a battle for first place; a Middlesex victory would put the two squads in a tie.
The Lady Devils came out on fire, taking a 20-13 lead in the first quarter and held a 29-18 halftime lead. Middlesex stepped up its defense in the second half, but Mathews held on for a 47-40 victory.
Mathews was led by Kaitlin Eriksen with 13 points followed by Mackenzie Moughon and Shelby Ware, eight points each, Lindsey Brown and Taylor Denton with six points each, Megan Zeller, four, and Samera Thomas, two.
