The life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered in a pair of King Day services in Mathews and Gloucester counties on Sunday and Monday.

The Mathews NAACP will hold its annual MLK celebration beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, 4185 Buckley Hall Road, Cobbs Creek.
Dr. Ivan Pierce, the Chief Nursing Officer at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, will be the guest speaker at this year’s program, whose theme is “The Legacy Continues.”
Pierce joined the staff at Riverside Walter Reed in May of 2021. He is the first man to serve as Chief Nursing Officer in the history of the Riverside Healthcare System.
A native of Surry County, Pierce has been a professional nurse for 26 years and has practiced as a nurse executive in Dallas, Texas, Rockville, Maryland, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Richmond.
