KATHY M. MATELYAN

November 1, 1950-March 14, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathy M. Matelyan, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. Kathy passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025. Born in Michigan and raised in Bristol, Virginia, she was a proud graduate of Virginia High School. She was the cherished daughter of Martha Helbert and the late Albert Helbert. Before her passing, Kathy resided in Hayes, Virginia, with her husband, William Matelyan.

A devoted mother, Kathy dedicated herself to raising her children as a stay-at-home mom, always present during their formative years. Her passion for helping others extended beyond her family—she spent over 15 years volunteering at Walter Reed Convalescent Center, offering kindness and companionship to those in need. Later, she brought that same warmth and dedication to her work at Commonwealth Senior Living, where she built cherished relationships with the staff, residents, and their families.

Kathy had a heart of gold and an infectious personality that could brighten any room. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially trips to the beach and shopping for the perfect new addition to her wardrobe—often a pair of shoes. She took great pride in her appearance, never leaving the house without a full face of makeup, a perfectly coordinated outfit, and her signature spritz of Obsession perfume.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Kris Ross (Candace); her daughter, Amanda Lucas (Evan), and her “adopted son,” Brandon Harrison. Kathy also leaves behind her cherished granddaughter, Ellieana, whom she affectionately referred to as her “whole world.” She adored spending all of her free time with Ellieana and they had an unbreakable bond built on laughter and memories.

Kathy M. Matelyan will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of experiencing her love and kindness. As we celebrate her life, we remember her unwavering spirit and the countless ways she enriched our lives.

A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, in honor of her love of animals.
