Wilford Kale, author of the book review column “Kale on Books,” won a critical writing first-place prize on May 6 in the annual Virginia Press Association news and advertising contest.
Kale is a correspondent for The Virginia Gazette and filed his competition articles under its banner. His column focuses primarily on Virginia writers and stories, and runs every two weeks in the Gazette and the Rappahannock Record in Kilmarnock, and occasionally in the Gazette-Journal, Smithfield Times, and Tidewater Review.
Kale’s last VPA award came 35 years ago, when he worked for the Richmond Times-Dispatch as Williamsburg bureau chief and senior writer.
