The Mathews High School JV softball team shut out the visiting King William Cavaliers, 4-0, last Thursday to improve the team’s record to 9-1 overall.
Taylor Locey started the first inning off by striking out her first three batters. Mathews got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Hallie Duncan hit Josey Bauby home and Harley Haydon stole home, giving Mathews a 2-0 lead. Emily Sorey had an exciting play in the third inning when she fielded a grounder and ran down the advancing runner trying to score for the second out of the inning.
Still leading 2-0, Andie Schlosshan started things off in the fifth inning with a grounder right back to the pitcher who was hit in the shin. This hit brought in Amber Jackson to increase the margin to 3-0. Schlosshan was brought home by a hard hit to center field by Bauby. In the seventh inning, the Lady Cavaliers loaded the bases but Kaylynn Heimrich and Locey registered the final outs to preserve the shutout.
