JV Lady Devils beat Panthers

The Mathews High School JV volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday at Charles City, beating the Panthers two sets to one.
In the first set, Emily Ward, Marley Brock, Mya Schroeder and Harmony Smith each had a kill. Carter Hayes served four aces in a row. Smith and Brock had two aces apiece as the Mathews girls won, 25-13.
Charles City came on strong in the second set, winning 25-22 and forcing a third and deciding set. Mathews made it first to 15 points to win the set and the game.
Northumberland
Last Thursday, the MHS girls visited Northumberland, falling to the Indians in straight sets. Mathews started off strong in the opening set, with Hayes serving an ace and leading Mathews to a 5-1 lead until Northumberland scored a kill to take control. Schroeder, Hayes and Ward also earned some kills, but the girls ended up losing the first set, 25-21. The second set was also a close one with the score going back and forth, but North-umberland pulled out the win.
