JV girls post three softball wins

The Mathews High School JV softball team picked up a pair of wins in recent action by the slaughter rule, shutting out Lancaster, 16-0, on April 24, and blanking Middlesex on Friday, 12-0.
Tuesday night’s game was a little harder for the Lady Devils, but in the end it still went down in the win column as Mathews edged King William, 6-5.
Mathews jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Tuesday’s game, but the homestanding Cavaliers tied it up and eventually went ahead, 4-2, with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Emily Sorey hit in two runs for Mathews in the top of the fifth to tie the game, but King William replied with another run to take a 5-4 lead.
Mathews headed into the top of the sixth inning trailing by a run when Hallie Duncan hit a double bringing in two runners around to score, giving Mathews a 6-5 lead. The Devils held the Lady Cavaliers scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win.
With the three wins, Mathews improved its record to 12-1.
