Joyce Ann Starling, 78, passed away Monday, July 3, 2023 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Joyce had been a resident of Gloucester, Virginia for the past 27 years.
Joyce was born on January 14, 1945 in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Frank Turner Jr. and the late Nellie Atkins Turner. In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her grandson, Patrick Stewart Carey.
Joyce was a graduate of Great Bridge High School, and briefly did clerical work for the Department of Defense at Norfolk Naval Air Station. It was there that she met her husband of 55 years, George B. Starling. She retired from the workforce to become a devoted housewife and loving mother of two children.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, always keeping her hands busy while watching old westerns, classic movies and game shows on TV.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Sandra Jean Carey, Michael Starling (Beth); granddaughters, Alicia King (Bobby), Michelle Carey and Valerie Starling; great-grandson, Joshua King; sisters, Jeanne Lesoine and Sandy Hagaman (Jimmy); uncle, John Turner; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service in celebration of Joyce’s life was held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, Virginia, on Monday, July 10, 2023, at 1 p.m., followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
