Joyce A. Zeigler of Yorktown, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, after a long illness.
She was born on Oct. 18, 1937, in Richmond, Va. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur G. Zeigler; mother, Irene B. Collins, and brother, Arthur ‘Artie’ Zeigler Jr.
Joyce is survived by her son, Michael Wirt and his wife Elizabeth; her grandchildren, Jennifer Wirt and Michael Wirt Jr., and many cousins and close friends.
Joyce was a graduate of Warwick High School, and spent most of her life as a Peninsula resident. She was a retired civil servant and previous secretary of Grafton Bethel Elementary School. She was an active member of the Piney Point Garden Club and a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
Joyce was a loving mother and devoted grandmother and there was nothing she loved more than spending time with her family and friends. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren and she cherished every moment she spent with them. She was affectionately known by all of the children as "Grandma Z" and could always be heard cheering in the stands. Joyce left our world with courage, strength and class just as she led her life and will always be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of York Convalescent Center for their attention to her care.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, from 7-8 p.m. at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home. A private burial will follow in Richmond.
