Joseph Sydney Brown III, 84, passed away on March 1, 2024 at his home. He was born in Richmond, Va., to the late Joseph and Pauline Brown.
Joe enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing on the James River. After graduating from the University of Richmond, Joe began his career with The Royal Insurance Company in New York City. After leaving The Royal, Joe worked with several insurance agencies and founded his own insurance agency, InSouth, Ltd., in Greensboro, N.C. He sold insurance to banks in North Carolina and Virginia.
Joe began a ‘Servant Garden’ in his yard, donating produce to those unable to purchase fresh vegetables. He expanded the project in his church, Holy Trinity. With additional volunteers and more land, they were able to donate several thousand pounds of produce each growing season.
Joe and Ann retired to Wake. He was active in his church and enjoyed restoring wooden boats.
He is survived by his wife, Ann G. Brown; sister, Paula Demosthenes (John); a son, Lawrence A. Brown (Milagros), and two stepdaughters, Amy Chandler (Patrick) and Caroline Bristol (James). He was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph S. Brown IV and Michael V. Brown, who is survived by wife, Karen. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jacque Moffett (Micah), Daniel Brown, Olivia Brown, Lauren Brown, Ryan Brown, Sarah Palos (Nico), and Rachel Butler (Patrick).
A memorial service will be held at Ware Episcopal on May 3, 2024 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception.
