Joseph Alvin West, age 78, of Hayes, died on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. Al retired from the Naval Weapons Station, Ordnance Department, and was affiliated with Phillips Energy. He was very active in Gloucester Point Baptist Church as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher. In addition, he was a member of the Abingdon Ruritan Club, Spicer Properties and Tidewater 70’s Softball Teams.

Parents, John Henry West and Hermie Hall West, and a brother, Lewis Henry West preceded him in death. Al is survived by his wife, Martha P. West; children, Susan Roach, Mark West (Amy), Shawn West (Lori), Carl Frisby, Jennifer Layden (Delmas), Amy Moore (Stuart), nine grandchildren, Lorin, Erica, Elie, Aiden, Asa, Ethan, Savhanna, Sydney and Campbell, and a sister, Lola Mae Green. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 10-10:45 a.m. at Gloucester Point Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11 o’clock, conducted by Pastor Dillon Evans.
