Jennie Seawell Handley (Jennie Mae), age 95, of Hayes, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 21, 1929 to the late Willie J. Seawell and Jennie Belvin Seawell. Jennie was a dedicated community member, volunteering her time with the Abingdon Rescue Squad, the Housing Partnership, and the Democratic Boosters. She also enjoyed a long and successful career, retiring from Tidemill Business Service and working as a bookkeeper alongside her dear friend, Hilda Hatcher. In addition, Jennie held the position of president of Big Island Seafoods, where she contributed significantly to the family business. Jennie lived a life dedicated to her family, community, and passions. She will be remembered for her deep devotion to her family, strong work ethic, and generosity of spirit. Jennie found joy in life’s simple pleasures, and her warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to her loved ones had a lasting impact on all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Tom Handley; her sister, Fanny West, and her brother, Willie “Sonny” Seawell Jr. Survivors include her children, Dale Handley, Gale Crane (Wayne), Marcia Haywood (Phillip); seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Shirley Lewis. Jennie was a lifelong member of Abingdon Episcopal Church; a service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the church.
