The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team closed out a successful season this week with victories against Tidewater District opponents Middlesex and King and Queen.
The jayvee Lady Devils finished with an overall record of 16-3, 7-1 in the Tidewater District; placing first in the district standings for the second year in a row.
The Devils traveled to Middlesex last Wednesday for another match-up with their cross-town rivals, beating the Chargers, 36-28.
Tommy Eriksen lauded Isabelle Turner for her man-to-man defense on Middlesex’s leading scorer. Hannah Rowe and Jessi Nelson in the low post led the team with 12 and six points, respectively. Shanice Williams, Whitney Eriksen and Taylor South added four each, followed by Macon Swartzwelder, Jacqueline Stewart and Jessie Zeller with two points each.
