The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team opened a busy week on Friday, hosting the Rappahannock Raiders. The Lady Devils had a hard time getting organized but after a timeout and some personnel adjustments, they started moving without the ball and crashing the boards for rebounds to take a 10-5 halftime lead. The Lady Devils continued to pressure the Lady Raiders in the second half, forcing the visitors into numerous turnovers. Meanwhile, the Lady Blue Devils offense came around enough to win eventually, 23-14.
Leading scorer was Hannah Rowe with 11 points followed by Jessie Zellar with four; Whitney Eriksen added three and Isabelle Turner and Jessie Nelson had two each.
