The Mathews High School jayvee girls’ basketball team capped off an undefeated season with a commanding 32-15 victory last Thursday over the King William Lady Cavaliers.
The Lady Blue Devils took their unblemished record into the King William gym and played perhaps their best overall game of the season. After opening up an impressive 7-0 lead, the Mathews defense temporarily allowed the home team to cut the first quarter margin to 7-6.
From there, point guards Maria Spadaccini and Keely Crittenden pushed the ball up the court, leading to easy baskets on the offensive end. The Lady Devils relied on their aggressive defensive pressure to outscore King William, 20-2, in the second and third quarters and played the hosts even in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
