In spite of suffering its only Tidewater District loss in recent action, the Mathews High School jayvee baseball team claimed the district title with a 5-1 record.
On Thursday, May 10, the undefeated Devils visited West Point. The MHS defense stayed strong throughout the game, but the bats fell silent as Mathews fell, 3-1. Logan Byrns was on the mound and pitched an outstanding game, striking out 12 through six innings. He also recorded the only hit for the Devils, a double. Willie Fernald scored the only run reaching on an error, with Taiwan Forrest getting the RBI.
The following Monday, May 14, the Devils faced off against the King William Cavaliers with the district title on the line. This time they were ready. King William scored two quick runs in the top of the first, but besides that, they were shut down. Sam Moore, Logan Byrns, and Logan Bell split the pitching duties as Mathews won, 10-5.
