The Mathews High School jayvee baseball team started its 2013 season with a win on March 11 at Essex.
Mathews returned eight starters from last year, with additions of Owen Conklin, Mikel Garret, Payton Blake, Marc Griffin, Reggie Johnson, Tyler Thompson and Joseph Callis.
The boys jumped on the Trojans quickly, defeating them by a score of 16-2. Sam Moore recorded the win and had seven strikeouts on the day. In relief, Logan Bell recorded three strikeouts in an inning, and Garrett recorded one.
Offensive leaders for the Devils were Chad Lewis (two hits), Zack Jarosz (one hit), (on base 5-for-5), Willie Fernald (two hits) and Brian Owens (one hit, sacrifice bunt).
On Friday, the jayvee Devils squared off with the Rappahannock Raiders in a doubleheader. The Devils played flat, dropping the first game, 11-4, and the second, 4-2. Bell and Jarosz took the losses.
