Jayvee Devils end season with 6-2 district record

The Mathews High School jayvee boys’ basketball team ended its 2010-11 season Friday. Although the team lost its finale on the road to King and Queen by a 36-33 margin, the squad finished with a 6-2 record in Tidewater District play.

Quentin Schafer had the hot hand for Mathews with eight points. This freshman had a great season, showing improvement in every game. On Friday, he handled the ball well and dished it off unselfishly to his teammates.

Joey Gordon helped out, scoring seven points. Cody Kelly and Ryan Ewell each scored four points. Dayshaun Williamson, Josh Wilson and Ian Smith scored three points apiece. Rounding out the scoring was Paul Burnette with one point. Burnette did a great job this season letting his presence be known, especially on defense. Kelly ended the season as the team’s high scorer.
