The Mathews High School jayvee volleyball team picked up a couple non-district wins this past week, beating Northumberland and Essex in a pair of road games.
Last Thursday, it took three sets to defeat the Northumberland Indians. After dropping the first set by a score of 25-17, Mathews came back fired up to defeat the Indians, 25-16. Northumberland was not going down without a fight, but the Devils eventually prevailed, 17-15.
"Although we had too many missed serves, several at key times in the third set, we still played a good game," coach Tina Reece said. "The girls passed and communicated very well throughout the entire match, and it really showed in the end."
Many of the Devils made contributions in this match. Isabelle Turner led the team with four assists, followed by Jackie Stewart with three.
