Janice R. “Gin Gin” South, 90, of Mathews, Virginia, passed to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 21, 2024. She was born on July 27, 1933 to Upsher Sr. and Mary Lewis Rainier.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Garnett F. South; her brothers, Upsher Rainier Jr. and Melvin Rainier; her sisters, Golden Dutton, Ruth Robins, Beulah Sadler, Lydia Rowe, Marilyn Morgan, Audrey Mitchem, and her granddaughter, Heidi Jo South.
She is survived by her two sons, Michael G. South and wife Joan, Dale F. South and wife Melanie; grandchildren, Shannon Dean (Josh), Dawn South (Donald), Laura Brandon (Andy), Blair Jarrell (Casey) and Lance South; great-grandchildren, Riley, Zach, Ryder, Tessa Jo and Ella Mae; her twin sister, Joyce Downs; sister-in-law, Florence Rainier; many nephews and nieces, and her friend, Diane Sadler.
She was a lifelong member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. She worked many years for the Islander Motel and D&P Embroidery. She was best known for her talent of care giving. She provided loving care to many of her sisters as they aged. Janice was a loving mother and grandmother. One of her greatest joys was taking care of her grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehab-Mathews for their loving care over the last year and a half.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Trinity Cemetery, Foster, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, P.O. Box 26, Gwynn, Va. 23066, and to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076.
