The winner of the 50th annual Mathews Market Days poster contest was unveiled Saturday afternoon at a ceremony at the Bay School Community Arts Center, 279 Main Street.
Jennifer Roahrig, 2024 chair of the Mathews Market Days committee, served as master of ceremonies, announcing this year’s winner—“It’s Corn,” a painting by Shawna Beavers.
“When asked how her painting reflected this year’s theme of ‘The Golden Era,’ she [Beavers] said, ‘There is a bountiful harvest of corn, which is a symbol of longevity and prosperity. Sunflowers equals happiness; daffodils equals resilience,” Roahrig said in making the announcement.
Beavers is a stay-at-home mom of two. She was born and raised in Cape Hatteras, N.C. The Beavers are a proud Coast Guard family who decided to make Mathews their forever home in 2017, Roahrig said.
This year’s winner was determined by an online voting poll, which took place from Aug. 1-14, with a total of 413 votes cast among this year’s nine entries.
