The annual Silent Auction Cake Sale will be open to the public for the 9th year on September 8, Guinea Heritage Day, at the Abingdon Ruritan Club building. Since 2015 this spectacular event has brought the limelight to Guinea cakes and those who bake them.
This silent auction was established as a method of financially supporting the Guinea Heritage Museum and was an inspiration of Della Grinnell. At first the sale was limited to 20 homemade cakes with a fixed price of $25 each. Many of the cakes were sold even before they reached the sale, but a disappointment for those who were there to purchase cakes, especially a lady who had driven all the way from Middlesex.
In 2016 the cake sale was revised. Nan Evans joined Della in setting up the auction system which has existed ever since. All cakes had a starting bid of $25 with a potential of going much higher. (Last year’s seven-layer chocolate cake cost some lucky buyer $200.)
