Hurricane season began on June 1 and fortunately so far this year we’ve been spared from the wrath of Mother Nature. One of the biggest storms to hit this area came in September 2003. Hurricane Isabel struck the region on Sept. 18 after making landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Above, Greg Becouvarakis had been coming to Gloucester since he was five years old, staying in this cottage on Ware Neck Point, owned by his father, Stan Becouvarakis of Hampton. This cottage, as well as six others along a small stretch of beach, were condemned. Power outages lasted for days, some weeks, with crews from up and down the East Coast lending a hand. Residents were appreciative of the out-of-town help, as seen in signs like the one that said “Thanks Alabama Power” (inset).
