HUBERT EDWARD JONES

Hubert Edward Jones, 81, of Hayes, Va., passed away at his home on January 12, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Kathleen Jones, formerly of Hayes, and his sister, Betty Greene, of Scranton, Pa. He is survived by his spouse, Peggy Jones; three sons, Hugh Jones of Richmond, Scott Jones (Michelle) of Hayes, and John Jones (Sarah) of Gloucester; six grandchildren, Ian Jones, Meredith Jones, Colt Jones, J.P. Jones, Audrey Jones, and Kayley Elias. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Jones (Cheryl) of Newport News and his sister, Sue Jones of Bethlehem, Pa., along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Lastly, he is survived by his special companion of more than 20 years, Sylveria Hernandez.

Hubert was born in Newport News on June 19, 1943, but his father’s work took the family to the D.C. suburbs of Prince Georges County, Md. and then to Richlands, Va., in Tazewell County where he ran track and played football at Richlands High School. After high school he went into the Air Force where he served for seven years, traveling to Japan and northern Africa, the two places he liked the most and talked about often. His career was as a Master Electrician. He worked for Newport News Shipbuilding, Surry Nuclear Power Plant, and Anheuser-Busch in Williamsburg when they were developing what was then Busch Gardens–The Old Country when it opened in 1975. Then, in 1981, Hubert went to work for Sentara Health where he spent the remainder of his adult working life until he retired. He worked in Plant and Engineering at the historic Hampton General Hospital on Victoria Blvd., which moved in 2002 to Coliseum Drive and was renamed as Sentara CarePlex Hospital.

Hubert had one hobby that he was the most passionate about, guns. Anything about guns would capture and keep his attention. He acquired quite the collection of pistols, revolvers, shotguns, rifles, and semi-automatics over the years. Some were new, some were antique, and some he built himself. He also reloaded his own ammunition. Hubert took his hobby to the woods during hunting season and to the outdoor range at Lafayette Gun Club in Yorktown when he just wanted to take in some target practice and talk to the other members who were just as passionate as he was about guns. One of those members was his good friend Jim Schuszler, who passed away 21 years ago on January 30, 2004. Rest assured; they have a lot of catching up to do. Services will be private.

In Hubert’s memory, contributions may be made to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.

Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
