A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday to unveil a historical marker celebrating Gloucester’s Bethel Rosenwald School, which served the black community of Sassafras in the days of school segregation.
The marker will be at the old school site on Native American Trail, immediately past Peasley Middle School. A shuttle from Bethel Baptist Church will begin taking people from the church to the site at 10:30 a.m.
Showers are predicted for most of the week, including Saturday morning. In case of rainy conditions, a virtual unveiling will be held in the church sanctuary at 11 a.m.
Bethel Rosenwald School, of seven Rosenwald schools in Gloucester County, served the community from 1923 to 1951. Following the program, artifacts from archaeological digs at the school site will be on display at the church’s fellowship hall. The Sassafras Stage Bethel Legacy & Heritage Room and new classrooms will be open for visitation.
