Travis Burns of Mathews found this old soft drink bottle recently, buried about one foot deep on property in Port Haywood. According to markings on the glass, it contained a product from the Mathews Bottling Works, operated before World War II by Morris Curfman of Susan. A 1982 article in the Gazette-Journal stated that Curfman and his wife Mae washed each returned bottle by hand and filled them with carbonated water and exact amounts of syrup stored in a large crock. The company closed when sugar became scarce during the war. Below, a closeup of the bottle’s imprint.
