Helen Lampathakis Kostyal of Mathews, Va., passed away at home on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013.
She was a graduate of Hampton High School 1946 and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond 1950. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Newport News and was a teacher for 23 years at Wythe Elementary of Hampton.
Having lived in Hampton most of her life, she retired to Mathews County in 1973, where she was a member of the Mathews Woman’s Club, Garden Club of Mathews, Meals On Wheels, Mathews Baptist Church, and Flotilla 66, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Daniel Kostyal of Mathews; daughters, Karen and her husband Charles Smith of Alexandria, Kristen and her husband Pete Dolan of Yorktown, and Kimberly and her husband Dennis Dimick of Arlington; five grandchildren, Brandon and Justin Wood, Will Smith, Claudia and Sofia Dimick, and two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Sydney Wood.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, in Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, Va., with interment following in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins.
