Hearing on G.I. historic district set for Aug. 17

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources will hold a second public information session on the creation of a historic district on Gwynn’s Island. It will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Gwynn’s Island Civic Center, 1996 Old Ferry Road.
According to a press release from Joanna McKnight, architectural historian with DHR, creation of a historic district and its inclusion in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places offers benefits to property owners.
She said it would help when grants are needed for community planning and that the documentation gathered will help support cases when a severe storm has impacted properties and grants are needed for repair. Insurance policies are not affected by the historic district’s register listing, she said, and owners who want to complete a rehabilitation project on an old building would have some financial incentives available.
