The Mathews County Board of Supervisors has canceled a public hearing on deeding the Confederate monument on the Mathews Court Green to a private entity.
The hearing had been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Mathews High School, but instead, the board will hold its regular November meeting at the same time and date, but in the historic courthouse on Court Street.
The county had developed a public notice for the meeting, but it was determined that the survey included with the notice was incorrect, said County Administrator Ramona Wilson.
Supervisor Mike Walls, who has been the most vocal supporter of transferring ownership of the monument to two Confederate organizations, the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Daughters of the Confederacy, has several times referred to the parcel to be conveyed as being “18 feet by 18 feet,” or the size of the granite edging surrounding the monument.
