Mathews High School freshman Richard Hahn (12-3 record overall) was the lone champion for the Blue Devils at Saturday’s Mathews Invitational, pinning his way through the finals to win the 165 lbs. weight class.
As a team, Mathews placed sixth out of a dozen teams competing at MHS in the day-long tournament. Competitors from Caroline, Franklin, Gloucester, Lafayette, Lancaster, Menchville, Norfolk Christian, Northumberland, Poquoson, Warwick and Windsor, and their fans, packed the school’s gymnasium.
In addition to Hahn, the Devils had two runners up—junior Fabian Cardenas (157 lbs., 14-1) and freshman Ivan Schiable (144 lbs., 13-2). Sophomore Mikey Ray (126 lbs., 11-7) and senior Cody Deagle (132 lbs., 14-2) each placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
