Gregory the genius

Reminiscence: Remember Stokes Tavern, a Green Book location that is still standing today? And then there was “The Genius,” Leon Gregory Sr., and his “Community Complex.”
He was one of the youngest Black entrepreneurs during the 1940s with vision and insight far ahead of his time. Mr. Gregory provided hope, excitement, opportunities, services and created a space during the harsh days of segregation where Black people could find relief from an oppressed society.
The area was commonly known as Leon’s Complex. It included The Rim Theater, The Hub Cleaners, Lee-Rye Nursery, Bus Rental, Tax Service, all-Black softball and baseball teams and the most popular venue of all, The Wagon Wheel. This was a tavern that was part of the Chitlin Circuit where Black entertainers performed and created music during one-night performances.
