In observance of National School Breakfast Week, students at Mathews Elementary School brought their grandparents or “someone special” in their life for breakfast. On Wednesday, March 8, Colten Hellebrandt, a second grader in Stacie Wiatt’s class, enjoyed having his grandparents, Paul and Thelma Hellebrandt, join him for the school’s pancake breakfast. “We had homemade pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and cereal. We served approximately 680 pancake meals and a good time was had by all. It is always so nice to have guests and something we really missed during COVID,” said Nelda Gibbs, cafeteria manager for Mathews County Public Schools. Gibbs, who said she loves this program, said this year’s event was a bittersweet one for her, as she will be retiring in June.
